Stop Smoking Help

ADHD And Smoking

Could teens that smoke be more likely to develop anxiety disorders in early adulthood? According to a study that was published in The Journal of the American Medical Association, they are. The study found that the teens who smoked a pack of cigarettes a day, or more, may develop generalized anxiety disorders, panic disorders or agoraphobia (a fear of experiencing a difficult or embarrassing situation that cannot be escaped).

They didn't know why smoking increased the risk of anxiety disorders in the study, but they believed that after further study into the relationship between anxiety disorders and impaired respiration, (caused be cigarette smoking) that further conclusions connecting the disorders and smoking could be drawn.

In any case, it should be just one more reason that kids wouldn't want to start smoking in the first place. Although I doubt if you told a child that if they smoke cigarettes they may develop an anxiety disorder later in life that they would take you very seriously. But if you were to point out a situation that they may be able to identify with, they might listen to you.

Choose someone that they know who is not sociable or well adjusted as an example, and point out that the person has smoked for a long time. Then mention the study that connected smoking with anxiety disorders as an afterthought. It may be a bit of a reach, but it's just one more negative image of smoking that your child will remember.

Of course never forget to mention the most obvious, immediate reasons for your child not to smoke. Things that they can relate to like yellow teeth, wrinkled skin, smelly clothes and hair. Negative associations or un-cool images will give smoking a bad image with kids, and negative opinions formed of smoking will payoff later when your child is offered a cigarette for the first time.
